How to Take Care of Your Grass

Proper Watering after installation will ensure that your new sod will get properly established. It will also impact on how well your lawn continues to flourish in the years to come.

New Sod

Summer/Spring Months

Water an average of 1" per day for the first 2-3 weeks.

Established Sod

Summer/Spring Months

Water an average of 2" twice a week thereafter.

Exposure to sun, wind and soil may cause this to vary.

Look for stress factors, dirt cracking, grass blades curling, and foot prints across the lawn. These are signs that your lawn needs watering.

New Sod

Fall/Winter Months

Water your new sod about 1" every other day, for about 2 weeks or until your root system gets established (If you water your lawn the day before and it is still moist the next day you go out to water your lawn, you can skip a day).

If a freeze is pending, water your new sod. The water will help protect the root system from any frost or ice damage.

Established Sod

Fall/Winter Months

Water your lawn about once a week during the winter season.

A big misconception about grass is that you don't have to water it during the winter because the grass has gone dormant and it is no longer growing. This is not true. The root system is still very much alive and does need water about once a week.

If grass is not watered at least once a week, when dormancy ends towards the beginning of spring, your grass will not appear green. It may appear thin, discolored and unhealthy.
